Berlin’s Best Homemade Hot Sauce Competition : September 2026

Show Us Your Secret Recipe! 🌶️

Your moment has arrived. That hot sauce you’ve been perfecting in your kitchen? The one your friends can’t stop talking about? The sauce that’s become a family legend? It’s time to bring it to Berlin Chili Fest Harvest Event and let the world decide if it’s truly the best.

Introducing Berlin’s Best Homemade Hot Sauce Competition – brought to you by Republic of Heat.

The Opportunity

This is grassroots. This is for home cooks, family recipe keepers, and sauce obsessives who’ve been working on their hobby.

If you’ve made a hot sauce at home that you’re proud of, you can enter. That’s it. No pre-registration. No complicated forms. Just bring your sauce to the festival and submit it in person.

How to Enter

It’s beautifully simple:

  1. Make your sauce – and make it hygienic (please research proper hot filling/canning processes before you start)
  2. Bring it to the festival – in a clean container
  3. Mark your container clearly with:
    • Your name
    • Email address
    • Phone number
  4. Include a label with:
    • Sauce name
    • Your name, email, and phone number
    • A detailed ingredient list by weight (highest to lowest percentage)
    • The type of chili used and its percentage (if possible)
    • Note if it’s fermented
  5. Drop it off before 2pm on Sunday at the main stage

That’s all. You’re in.

How You’re Judged

Here’s where it gets serious. Your sauce will be tasted live on the main stage by expert judges who will score it out of 10 across five categories:

🔴 Aroma / Nose – First impressions matter
🔴 Use of Chilis / Heat Profile – This isn’t about who can burn the most mouths; it’s about how well the heat works with the sauce
🔴 Flavor / Palate – Complexity, balance, taste
🔴 Creativity / Individuality / Memorability – Does it stand out? Is it unique?
🔴 Finish / Aftertaste / Afterburn – How does it linger?

Here’s the fairness part: The judges won’t know whose sauce they’re tasting. Blind judging means your sauce is evaluated purely on merit, not hype or brand.

The Rules (Keep It Real)

  1. You must have made the sauce yourself – Family recipes are allowed; store-bought bottles are not
  2. Non-commercial only – This is for home cooks, not established businesses
  3. Hygiene matters – Your sauce needs to look and smell safe to eat (proper preparation is your responsibility)
  4. Our decisions are final – Judge feedback isn’t negotiable, but it’s expert feedback
  5. We may adjust rules – To keep things fair and safe

What You Win

This isn’t about sponsorship dollars or factory contracts (unless Republic of Heat decides that, but that’s between you and them!). Here’s what you’re actually competing for:

🏆 A certificate signed by the judges
🏆 Ultimate glory – Your name, your sauce, your victory, announced to hundreds of people
🏆 Bragging rights forever – “I won Berlin’s Best Homemade Hot Sauce”
🏆 The right to defend your title – Come back next year and prove you didn’t get lucky
🏆 Festival goodies – Prizes from the festival community

The Judging & Announcement

Sunday, September 6th

  • Before 2pm: All entries must be dropped off at the main stage
  • 5pm: Live judging takes place on the main stage – you can watch it happen
  • 6pm: Winners are announced at the festival

Come watch the judges taste through the entries. It’s entertaining, it’s transparent, and you’ll see exactly how seriously we take homemade sauce.

Why Enter?

Because your hot sauce deserves to be tasted. Because you’ve put in the work. Because there’s nothing better than hearing someone say, “This is incredible – who made this?”

Because you might just make the best sauce in Berlin.

Before You Enter

A few things to know:

  • Make sure your sauce is prepared hygienically – research proper hot filling/canning if it’s shelf-stable
  • If you’re fermenting, mention it on the ingredient list
  • Your ingredient list matters – judges want to see what you did
  • Heat isn’t everything – judges are looking for balance, creativity, and flavor above pure spice
  • Bring multiple bottles if you can – judges might need backup if they love it
